The Ryder Cup spirit was alive and well this past weekend at Wawenock Golf Club, where the Men’s Morning League battled the Men’s Evening League in a spirited match-play showdown. After three rounds of competition, the Morning League team emerged victorious with a hard-fought 23–19 win.
The day was more than just about golf—it was about camaraderie and connection. The event gave players from the two leagues, who don’t often cross paths, a chance to tee it up together, share stories, and enjoy the game under perfect conditions. Laughter, good-natured ribbing, and plenty of birdie putts defined the day, making it as much about fellowship as competition.
Special thanks go out to those who helped make the day possible: Ken Steele, who came up with the idea, and Pete Lewis, who put the plans in motion. Special shoutout to Damon Ellinwood, who stepped in as a last-minute sub and kept the scoreboards in order.
The competition itself was a nail-biter. After two rounds, the Evening League held a slim 15–13 advantage. But the Morning League staged an impressive rally, capturing five of the seven matches in the final round to seal the comeback victory. Leading the charge were Peter Christine and Brian Wiacek, who swept all three of their matches to help secure the trophy for their team.
Reviews of the format and logistics were overwhelmingly positive, and the buzz afterward centered on one big question: should this become a regular event? With the strong turnout, exciting finish, and positive energy throughout the day, many hope the answer is yes. Players are encouraged to share ideas about how to build on this success and make the next event even better.
Congratulations to the Morning League on their win, and thank you to everyone who made the Ryder Cup at Wawenock such a memorable day. Here’s to more friendly rivalries, more great golf, and more chances to connect on the course.
