For nearly a decade, Peter Christine has been a cornerstone of the Wawenock Golf Club community. Joining the Board in March of 2017, he quickly distinguished himself as someone who combined a love of the game with an unmatched attention to detail. After serving faithfully as a Board member, he stepped into the role of vice president in 2021, and when Nick Waltz resigned in April 2022, Peter took on the presidency. Across three full terms—nine years of service—Peter’s leadership left a lasting mark on every corner of the club.
Preserving History and Building Community
One of Peter’s greatest contributions has been his dedication to preserving and sharing Wawenock’s story. He dove into the club’s history, researching its origins and course design by Wayne Stiles & John Van Kleek. He also redesigned the club’s website–including the Wayne Stiles Trail page–and added a detailed hole-by-hole description that both members and visitors now enjoy.
But Peter’s vision went beyond history—he built for the future. He helped spearhead the planning for next year’s centennial celebration, organized club records and documents for safekeeping, and strengthened donor relationships that bolstered annual fundraising efforts. His ability to recruit new Board members and encourage participation reflected his belief that the health of the club depends on the strength of its community.
Major forward-looking projects completed during his presidency included the construction of the new driving range, the work to fix hole No. 4 and the significant repairs to the clubhouse and club storage building. Peter’s determination to make Wawenock the best it can be on and off the course stands the test of time.
For years, Wawenock operated without a general manager, a reality that could have strained lesser leaders. But Peter’s sharp eye and hands-on approach kept things running smoothly. From operational issues to volunteer days, he never hesitated to step in, roll up his sleeves, and lead by example. He organized countless volunteer workdays and was always among the first to show up and put in the effort himself. His newsletters—equal parts informative and entertaining—kept members connected, smiling, and in the loop.
A Life Beyond the Fairways
Peter’s service to Wawenock was built on decades of experience and community involvement. A Midcoast Maine resident since 1978, he spent his career as a real estate broker with Drum & Drum, developing a deep knowledge of our local markets.
Beyond his professional life, he has always been a dedicated outdoorsman and community leader—serving as president of the Sheepscot River Salmon Club, lobbying for the Atlantic Salmon Federation, guiding fly fishing trips, and instructing newcomers to the sport. His civic service includes time on the boards of Rising Tide Co-op and the Heartwood Regional Theater Company, as well as 16 years with the Alna Fire Department, where he rose to assistant fire chief and deputy fire chief.
Looking Ahead
While Peter’s official role at Wawenock is coming to a close, his presence will never leave the club. He now has more time to enjoy the game he helped nurture for others, and members can expect to see plenty of him out on the fairways—especially with the new set of clubs he’s been promising himself. No more blade irons!
On behalf of the entire Wawenock Golf Club community, we thank Peter for his years of leadership, dedication, and friendship. His work has strengthened the foundation of our club, ensuring that Wawenock’s next century will be as strong as its first. We wish him nothing but fairways and greens ahead, and we’re excited to see his next chapter—both on the course and beyond.
Thank you, Peter, for everything.
