Wawenock Golf Club is excited to welcome PGA Professional Dan Gillis, who brings over four decades of experience to our members and guests.
A PGA member since 1985, Dan most recently served as Head Professional at Nabnasset Lake Country Club in Westford, Massachusetts. His playing career speaks for itself — he captured the New Hampshire Chapter Championship in 2005, won the New England PGA Head Pro Championship in 2021, and has qualified for the National Club Pro Championship three times and the Senior Club Pro Championship three times.
Dan's teaching philosophy is refreshingly straightforward. Rather than overwhelming students with technical jargon, he focuses on helping golfers understand what makes the swing work — and what makes it break down. He draws on familiar movements and relatable concepts to make instruction accessible for players at every level.
Beginning Tuesday, June 9, Dan will offer private lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rates are $40 for a 30-minute session and $70 for a full hour. Whether you're picking up a club for the first time or looking to sharpen your game, there's a lesson format that fits your needs.
Dan will also be hosting men's, women's, and youth clinics during the weeks of June 22 and June 29 — a great opportunity to learn alongside others in a fun, low-pressure group setting.

Leagues off & running
The leagues are in full swing at Wawenock Golf Club, with the women's and men's groups kicking off their first competitive week after last week's practice rounds. The energy around the club has been strong, and if the early action is any indication, the 2026 season is shaping up to be a memorable one.
On the men's side, more than 60 players turned out across the morning and evening leagues combined — a promising sign for the season ahead. Many stuck around after their rounds to enjoy food and drinks at the 1926 Pub & Grille, making for a full day at the club. In the evening league, Board of Trustees President Matt Poole stepped in as a sub alongside Ken Steele and wasted no time making an impression, reaching four under par through just five holes (he finished -1 on the round). RJ Ochs made a welcome return to the league and played well, with Ryan Feltis also turning in a solid round in his first league match in some time. The morning league had its own highlight: Joe Taylor, Wawenock's winningest champion, fired a one-under round that suggested he's already in mid-season form — a development that will no doubt have fellow competitors taking notice.
The women kicked off their play with a good group that took advantage of nice weather and excellent course conditions to have a fun morning on the links.
In the closet to the hole competitions, Paul Kelsey took closest to the pin honors on Hole 8 in the Evening League, sticking his shot just 3 feet 11½ inches from the cup. The Morning League saw Brian Wiacek win closest to the pin on Hole 8 at 5 feet 9½ inches, while Chuck Plummer earned closest to the hole in two shots on Hole 1 with an impressive approach to 6 feet 9 inches.
The Women's League had two closest-to-the-pin winners this week. Louise Cornforth claimed the honors on Hole 3, finishing 11 feet 3 inches from the pin, and Linda Cosgrove won on Hole 8 with a shot that settled 19 feet 5 inches away.
First social scramble upcoming
One of the most anticipated events on the Wawenock social calendar is just around the corner. The first Social Scramble of the season tees off on Sunday, June 14, at 2:30 p.m., and it's the perfect opportunity to get out on the course with friends, meet some fellow members, and enjoy everything the club has to offer.
The format is simple: teams of four, scramble rules, and a whole lot of fun. But if last year's events are any indication, "simple" might be underselling it. Previous social scrambles have featured moments like teeing off from a marshmallow, swapping in some unconventional clubs, and playing holes that aren't part of the typical round — the kind of surprises that make for great stories in the 1926 Pub & Grille afterward.
Sign-ups are available in the Pro Shop, so don't wait too long to get your team together. And if June 14 is just the beginning — keep an eye on the Wawenock website calendar and social media channels for dates of additional social scrambles throughout the season. There's something for everyone, whether you're a seasoned competitor or just looking for a relaxed afternoon on the course.
Driving range & restaurant open
The driving range is open, providing members with a dedicated space to warm up, work on their swing, or simply enjoy time on the range. Finishing touches to the netting on the right side are coming soon. Range passes are available for purchase online through your member account or in the Pro Shop.
The 1926 Pub & Grille continues to serve guests seven days a week. Weekly specials are posted every Monday on social media and in the restaurant — worth keeping an eye on as the season kicks into high gear.
Celebrating 100 years
Mark your calendars — Wawenock Golf Club's Centennial Celebration is set for Saturday, August 1, and it's shaping up to be a day to remember. The festivities will include 18-hole morning golf, a midday cookout, 9-hole afternoon golf, and an evening celebration dinner to cap off 100 years of this beloved club. Full ticket information and additional details will be shared in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to the website and social media channels to make sure you don't miss a thing. This is one you won't want to sit out.
Course conditions improving
A big thank you is in order for Superintendent Greg Dalot and his hardworking maintenance crew, who have been putting in serious effort to get Wawenock looking its best as the season gets underway. The results are hard to miss — the greens are rolling faster and looking sharper with each passing week, and the course as a whole is in excellent shape.
The crew's attention to detail extends beyond the greens as well. Several of the new tee boxes now have divot sand available for players, a small but meaningful addition that goes a long way in keeping the course in top condition. Members have also been doing a great job following the on-course cart signage, and that cooperation makes a real difference for the grounds team. It truly takes the whole Wawenock community to keep this place looking the way it does — so thank you to Greg, his team, and every member doing their part out there.
